Is IELTS Difficult to Pass?


Well, there is no “one” answer to this question. IELTS can be easy or difficult both for people with different levels of English. Test takers with a beginner’s level to an intermediate level of English will consider IELTS exam difficult, whereas students with intermediate to advanced level of English will find IELTS easy.  Now, if you are now thinking that how would you assess what level you belong to, then let’s help you understand through the following parameters to map your performance and see which level you belong to and how can that be improved in order to score 8 bands in IELTS.
PARAMETERS TO ASSESS LEVEL OF ENGLISH
- Grammar
Quite honestly, if you are making frequent grammatical errors in your writing and speaking, then you belong to beginner’s to advanced level BUT if you are only making few grammar errors then your level is intermediate or advanced.
- Pronunciation 
Do you pronounce words correctly? Yes? No? Try pronouncing the following words and assess yourself.
  • Jalapeño
  • Extempore
  • Photography
  • Gnocchi
  • Lambaste
  • Gyro
  • Gauge
How many did you get correct? Look for their pronunciations on google.com and assess yourself.
3-4 correct - Beginner’s level to intermediate level of English.
6-7 correct - Intermediate to advanced level of English.
- Sentence structure 
This is the most important criterion to understand your level of English language. First of all, you need to count the number of words in one sentence. If your sentence, for example, has 5-6 words then you can judge that your level is beginners or lower. However, if your sentence has more than 15 words along with connectors (We shall talk about it in another segment of our Blog) then you can gauge what your level may be upper intermediate to advance.  
- Grammatical Range
 You also should identify your level of English by checking the grammar styles being used in your writing as well as speaking. There are ample types of the grammatical range that you must include in your answer especially Writing Task. By grammatical range, we mean, various advanced grammar styles, such as- Gerund, Conditionals (3 types), Cleft Sentences, Past Tense, Present Tense, Future, Modals, Connectors, Passives Voice and many more. IELTS examiners expect you to show a diverse range of the use of these grammar structures in your writing to give you required bands.
- Vocabulary
Another very essential part of the marking criterion for IELTS. IELTS examiners expect from you to use unusual words or synonyms in your writing tasks. In both writing tasks, in order to use effective words, you should read advanced level resources whether online (The Newyorker, The Guardian, BBC, and others) or offline (Novels and books) on the internet which will help you build your own vocabulary to be used in essays.
